Azhimala beach, the best beach of the town

Azhimala is a beach near to Kovalam. Its the best beach in the town. Kovalam most be most popular beach in Thiruvananthapuram but my choice for the best beach is Azhimala. Its less crowded, cleaner and beautiful. The bluish color of the sea greets you to spend nice time there at the beach.

Kovalam is one of the popular beach in Kerala. Lots for tourists visit the beach every season. It is situated 20kms away from the Thiruvananthapuram city.

Here are a few snaps from the Kovalam beach. On the way to Kovalam we can see a pond from the bridge. Below is the view of the pond from the bridge.

Near the beach we can see lots of coconut trees, trademark of Gods own country. Below are the snaps taken from the rock side of the beach.

An evening at St. Andrews Beach, Kazhakutam

Kazhakutam is famous for Asia's biggest IT park, Technopark. 3kms away from Kazhakutam is the St.Andrews beach. This is not a tourist spot, but it is a silent place to watch the sea in action. Here are some of the snaps from the beach. On the way to St Andrews beach is the Marian Engineering College and the KINFRA park.

How to reach St.Andrews Beach?
1) Thiruvananthapuram -> Chackai -> Kazhakutam -> St.Andrews
2) Kollam -> Attingal -> Kazhakutam -> St.Andrews

Shanghumugham Beach

Shanghumagham beach is around 5kms away from Thiruvananthapuram city. This beach is near Thiruvananthapuram airport. Veli is the nearest tourist destination. This is a popular tourist spot for families and couples. Restaurant (Indian Coffee House) is available near by the beach.

How to reach Shanghumugham Beach ?
Thiruvananthapuram -> Enjackal -> Chackai -> Shanghumagham
Tourists come from Kollam can reach Chackai through NH 47 bypass.

Chowara Beach

Chowara is a place near to Vizhijam. It is around 20 kms from Thiruvananthapuram and 4 kms from Kovalam. Some of the top resorts in Kovalam is near to Chowara. Nearest bus stand is Vizhinjam. Frequent buses and other transportation services are available to Chowara. Azhimala Beach is near to Chowara.

Azhimala beach

Azhimala is a beach near to Kovalam. It is a very quiet beach. Its slightly more than 20 kms from Trivandrum city. Around 5-6 kms from Vizhinjam. There are lots of Ayurvedic resorts in Azhimala. There is a temple in the name of Azhimala. The temple is very near to the beach. The beach can be viewed from a hill (mala). That’s why its name is Azhimala. The view of the beach from the Azhimala hill is very nice.

Another kilometre from Azhimala, you will reach Chowara, another beautiful beach. Evenings are the best time as you can watch the beautiful sunset.

How to reach Azhimala ?
The beach can be reached from Trivandrum or Nagercoil or Kollam.

From Nagercoil (2 ways)
- Nagercoil-> Marthandam-> Kaliyikkavila-> Parassala-> Amarivila-> Neyyatinkara-> Poovar-> Pulinkudi-> Azhimala (NH 47)

- Nagercoil-> Marthandam-> Kaliyikkavila-> Parassala-> Amarivila-> Neyyatinkara-> Balaramapuram-> Uchakada-> Mukkola-> Pulinkudi-> Azhimala (NH 47)

Buses are frequently available from Trivandrum to Balaramapuram. From Balaramapuram catch a bus to Vizhijam, get down at Mukkola. From Mukkola catch bus to Azhimala kshethram (temple).

From Trivandrum (2 ways)
- Thampanoor-> Karamana-> Pappanamcode-> Nemom-> Vedivachancoil-> Balaramapuram-> Uchakada-> Mukkola-> Pulinkudi-> Azhimala (NH 47)

- Thampanoor-> Eastfort-> Manacaud-> Ambalathara-> Thiruvallam-> Kovalam Jn-> Vizhinjam-> Mukkola-> Pulinkudi-> Azhimala (NH 47 Bypass)

Buses are frequently available from Trivandrum to Balaramapuram. From Balaramapuram catch a bus to Vizhijam, get down at Mukkola. From Mukkola catch bus to Azhimala kshethram (temple).

From Kollam (1 way)
- Kollam-> Attingal-> Kazhakutam-> Chackai-> Enjackal-> Thiruvallam-> Kovalam Jn-> Vizhinjam-> Mukkola-> Pulinkudi-> Azhimala (NH 47 Bypass)

Buses are frequently available from Kollam to Trivandrum. From Thampanoor catch a bus to Vizhijam. Catch a bus to Balaramapuram or Kattakada, get down at Mukkola. From Mukkola catch bus to Azhimala kshethram (temple).

As you reach Pulinkudi you can see a big board announcing `Azhimala Siva temple'. Turn right and proceed nearly a kilometre to reach the destination.

Note: Few buses are available directly from Thampanoor/Eastfort to Azhimala kshethram (temple). Here Thampanoor refers to the Trivandrum bus stand.
